Port Huron Parks & Recreation along with local businesses and organizations will express their holiday greetings in the form of lighted displays meticulously arranged throughout Pine Grove Park. “It’s our goal to offer a spectacular winter scene for everyone to enjoy while driving or walking through with their family,” said Kati Gardner, Port Huron Recreation Department supervisor.
Last month, Gardner started recruiting interested businesses and groups to occupy 30 stations at the park. Each business has the task to decorate one station with holiday decor ensuring the success of the event.
“I am incredibly excited about this project and thrilled to see how invested is our community!” Gardner said.
As an incentive, the department has launched a friendly contest where involved businesses can compete for the 2020 Winter Celebration trophy. The public can vote for their favorite station online by visiting the event's webpage starting Nov. 27. The winner will be announced on Dec. 28. The decorations will be lit Nov. 25 through Jan. 2 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every night.
In partnership with Downtown Development Authority and Sperry's Moviehouse, a reverse parade named Sperry’s Santa Drive-thru Spectacle will add to the celebration. Taking place on Friday, Nov. 27, the community is welcomed to line-up for a drive-thru experience and enjoy holiday lights, stationary floats, and wave hello to Santa Claus himself.
The parade line-up will begin on Michigan Ave. at 6 p.m. Participants must enter it through McMorran Blvd. heading north towards Pine Grove Park. There will be no access from crossroads downtown or closer to the park such as Lincoln Ave. and Pine Grove Park Dr. during this event. Pre-registration is encouraged allowing participants to choose a timeslot that best works for them.
“I can’t wait to see it all come together,” said Nancy Winzer, Port Huron Parks & Recreation Director. “We have lights, Santa, cocoa, and now additional lighted trees across the street. It should be a merry holiday for all,” she said referring to the events at Pine Grove Park and McLaren Hospital Festival of Trees that will take place at the same time.
Businesses and groups can still take part in the festivities by becoming a Winter Celebration sponsor. The department currently offers several sponsorship levels that will allow for additional lighted displays throughout the park. For more information on how to become a sponsor, interested parties should contact the Port Huron Recreation Department at (810) 984-9760 or phrec@porthuron.org.
A special thank you to our sponsors Acheson Ventures, Todd Goldman, Mary Kelly, TCF Bank, Lake Huron Medical Center, Electric Motor Services, and St. Clair County Family History Group! The entire community appreciates you!!!
